Today we are talking about one of my most favorite hobbies, sleeping! Sleep (or the lack thereof) is a very hot topic among new parents. Recently a mom in one of my postpartum yoga classes shared about her experience as a parent who could successfully soothe her baby to sleep. This left her feeling incredibly burnt out and tired. His sentiment was shared by many members of the community.

in this episode yoga|birth| babies I’m talking to Sarah Skiles, pediatric sleep consultant, doula, and advanced newborn care specialist. Sarah’s personal experience with growing health and postpartum mood disorders due to lack of sleep is the driving force behind her passionate way of serving, supporting and guiding new parents. Sarah shares tools to help your family create healthy sleep habits from birth, as well as what new parents should expect and with baby Sarah has you covered too! I couldn’t be more excited to share this episode with all of you. If you’re preparing for a newborn or your baby has sleep issues, or you just want to set really healthy sleep habits from the start, you’re going to get a lot out of this conversation.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Learn about Sarah and what led her to becoming a sleep consultant and newborn care specialist.
  • Setting expectations for what sleep looks like for a newborn and how long parents should expect the average newborn to sleep through the night.
  • What is sleep training and what is not.
  • Ways to create healthy sleep habits.
  • An example of a healthy nighttime, sleep routine.
  • Sleep regression: When to expect it and why, and how to get baby back into a sleep routine.
  • There’s just how much fluidity there can be in a baby’s schedule.
  • Work on nap times with the second child because the older child’s schedule may conflict with the younger child’s sleep schedule.
  • Establish a sleep routine as your baby grows (especially if he’s never had consistent sleep before).
  • One final piece of advice/advice Sarah would like to give to new or expectant parents.
  • Where you can find Sarah’s work.

About Sarah:

Sarah Skiles is a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant, Certified Doula, Advanced Newborn Care Specialist, and mother of two wonderful boys. Ever since she was a little girl, she knew she had an important role to play in the world, taking care of children and helping tired parents. She got her first babysitting job at age 12 and even started a babysitting club (guess what my favorite books were?!) She became a certified doula in 2013 and supports parents during childbirth. And started serving them as comfort. It wasn’t long before it became clear that the birth, although an incredibly important event, was just a drop in the bucket of support and guidance that new parents needed in order to be truly accomplished!
Sarah’s personal experience with increasing health and postpartum mood disorders due to lack of sleep is the driving force behind the passionate way she serves, supports and guides new parents. Our little ones are biologically wired to sleep, and we can give them the ability to do so if we knew how. Sarah believes that having a baby and getting enough sleep to stay healthy and be the parent, spouse, friend, etc. that you want to be is not only possible, but 100% within reach.
